Civil Ceremony
Foreigners can be legally married in Mexico if they present the following documents and comply with the requirements. The civil ceremony is the only ceremony legally recognized in Mexico.
A justice of the peace performs this ceremony.
- Couple's original birth certificates.
- Death certificate of spouse, if applicable.
- Divorce papers, if applicable.
- Copy of passports or Driver's Licenses and tourist card ( issued at the airport upon arrival).
- Blood test and health certificate (the blood tests must be done in Nuevo Vallarta where they will issue a certificate of good health). These tests must be performed in Nuevo Vallarta within 15 days before the wedding.
- Two witnesses each for the bride and groom: friends or family members, not parents. Must be over the age of 18 and be present during the ceremony in order to sign the marriage certificate.
- Completed application form.
Birth, death (if applicable) and divorce (if applicable) certificates must be translated by an authorized translator of the Superior Tribunal of Justice of the State of Nayarit (here in Nuevo Vallarta). These documents must be in Nuevo Vallarta one month in advance to allow time for translation.
Birth certificates and original divorce certificates will stay with the justice of the peace. THEY WILL NOT BE RETURNED.
Although the civil ceremony is the only legally recognized marriage in Mexico , we feel it is important that you know that this procedure will take some time out of your vacation. It is required that you be here at least three days prior to wedding day. Also, the vows in a civil ceremony are set and cannot be changed and some do not agree with what is said. Some couples prefer to have a romantic spiritual ceremony here (which avoids the legal requirements and procedures) and marry legally in their hometown.
