The 30 mile wide Bay of Banderas is one of the largest natural bays in the world with Puerto Vallarta at its center point. Rich in sea life, the Bay is a wintering ground for humpback whales which are frequently seen "breaching" or leaping during their December through March sojourn in the Bay. Fishing in the Bay and beyond is both an important industry and an exciting sport year round.
Today, visitors to the Bay can fully enjoy areas that are still inaccessible by road. Virtually a third of the Bay's coastline is reachable only by boat, including the many beautiful cove beaches lacing the coastline to the south of Boca de Tomatlan.
