Beaches in PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico

Puerto Vallarta is located on Bahia De Banderas. Incidentally, Bahia De Banderas is the second largest natural bay in North America and covers over 100 miles of coast line. Puerto Vallarta is blessed with a large number of beautiful beaches.  It is gifted with everything a beach lover would want to see. beautiful, clean, wide open soft white sand beaches to small rock surrounded coves.  Puerto Vallarta is a heaven for anyone who enjoys beach activities like fishing, whale watching and parasailing. Other thrilling activities such as bungee jumping, windsurfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, jet skiing or fishing are available to keep you entertained completely. The surf at most beaches normally remains very calm and safe for swimming all over the year.

Puerto Vallarta has different beach areas with more than forty distinct beaches.  Puerto Vallarta as one of the favorite destinations for the true beach lover. The first beach zone is north of Puerto Vallarta. Playa de Oro and the Marina district are located here.  The Playa de Oro is a big sandy beach. Many water sport events are organized here as it has very few rocky areas. This makes it popular not only among tourists but also the residents of Puerto Vallarta. 

If you seek a place which is quiet and not extremely energetic then you have to travel toward Punta de Mita, further north. Here the beaches of Banderas Bay are quiet as they reach up toward Punta de Mita.   If you like windsurfing then this is the right place for you. These northern beaches normally have very strong surf which is perfect for catching a wave. Therefore, the best windsurfing also takes place in this area. The northern beaches, on the road to Punta de Mita are full of beach side restaurants featuring fresh seafood of all kinds. These beaches are generally less crowded than the city beaches and favorite among those who would like to spend their day with a great side trip with relaxing and munching.

Destiladeras and Los Venaderos are two of the more enjoyable beaches in the northern area.  Las Marietas Islands are great for snorkeling and wind surfing (when the conditions are correct). Las Marietas Islands are preserved by the Mexican government as a bird sanctuary.  These islands are accessible by boats which can be rented on most of the northern beaches.

The southern beaches are also very beautiful and usually much less crowded. Puerto Vallarta's most popular beach, Playa de los Muertos, is located just south of the malecon and the River Cuale.  Weekends on this beach are incredible. This beach is centered by the neighborhood of Olas Altas (Old Town or Zona Romantica). This town possesses a great variety of restaurants and shops. Olas Altas has a lot of hotels lined along the long beachfront. These hotels and neighboring restaurants are usually crowded by tourists, day and night. The beachfront bars and restaurants in this area are an ideal place to catch one of the incredible Vallarta sunsets.

South of the town lies numerous small coves and beaches.  Most notable of them is Playa de Mismaloya, a fairly remote cove. It is usually very quiet and has preserved its natural beauty despite of development. It is a great place to relax on the beach for a day. Yet another beautiful beach is Boca de Tomatlan. .  It is superb for swimming. This beach is very quite and peaceful. It is the last beach where you can reach by road. It is comparatively less developed then the others. There are some small seafood restaurants and taco stands. You can hire local pangas here to take you to Yepala, Las Animas or Quimixto.
