Water Sports

Water sports abound in and around Puerto Vallarta. Because the waters of Banderas Bay are protected and calm, swimming, parasailing and jet skiing are fantastic from almost any beach. You'll find that diving and snorkeling are the best at either the south end of town toward Los Arcos, which is a natural preserve, or in the northern area near Bucieras and Punta de Mita, which is located near the northern point of the bay. If you are the daring type you can Bungee Jump from a platform built on a cliff out over the Pacific.

While board and sail surfing are not prime, parasailing, fishing, jet skiing, "banana' tube rides and boating are extremely popular with plenty of services including boat rentals and snorkel/scuba outlets. Half a dozen dive shops offer certification training and excursions to off-shore islands.

Fishing

Puerto Vallarta offers not only some good deep sea sport fishing but also fresh water fishing in the local mountains for a fishing sports lover. All types of fish inhabit the waters around Puerto Vallarta at different times of year. All of which can be chased and caught on a wide variety of fishing boats, from established fishing fleets or from pangas that can be hired at almost any of the more popular beaches.

Puerto Vallarta may not feature in list of the most popular or the most prolific sport fishing destination in Mexico. Its highlight is the quality of sport fishing that is available here. There are many options available to a fisherman in Puerto Vallarta.

You can fish from pangas, luxury yachts or from foot boats of the charter fleet. Almost everyone who fishes out of Puerto Vallarta will catch something as the waters are abundant with most commonly found sailfish or the other seasonal species of fish. The sport fishing companies can arrange a charter for your. Pangas can be hired from almost any beach. Blue water fishing is outstanding and some reports state that Puerto Vallarta provides more billfish than other west coast locations in México. The biggest fishing event, the Puerto Vallarta Sailfish Tournament ( Torneo de Pez Vela) is held each year in November since mid fifties.

Whale Watching

Banderas Bay is home to it own colony of Humpback Whales. Many tours are available to view these magnificent mammals. Humpback whales mate in the bay in winter months and provide memorable experience indeed.

Sightseeing and other activities

Excursions by sightseeing boats are among the real treats and include day cruses and sunset sails. Sightseeing-by-sea is liable to offer cavorting dolphins year around and, with luck, manta rays. A very popular experience is a day cruise to one of the tree beaches at the south end of the bay and not accessible by land: Yelapa, Quimixto and Las Animas. You can have lunch on shore in shelters made in shade of tall palm trees. Various land trips include from a visit to villages to drive along beaches located on the north shore of the bay, horseback rides into Puerto Vallarta's jungles, mountain biking and general sightseeing tours. Another unique day trip involves lunch at one of three jungle restaurants overlooking flowing streams at the far end of the South Shore. All this options are offered by tour and concierge desks.
